Reading the last Teen titans (that really made no sense whatsoever, I don't know what the writter was thinking) I came upon this pair of pages:
under the cut )

That reminded me a lot of this other page here, back in the good old Young Justice days (man, how do I miss Peter David):
also under the cut )

So, what the heck is that? Homage? copy? Or more likely a lazy and lousy writer?

I mean, even if the situation is really similar -the most "prone-to-get-evil" member of the group looks for Robin (whom she is not-so-secretly in love with) and asks for his help in a not quite legal operation-, Peter David had a point in saying that taking someone guilty out of prison was perhaps too black a grey. Meanwhile, Robin not wanting to forge some papers? Tim "I made up a fake uncle" Drake? It's just stupid. I don't see Tim or Bruce (or even Clark "I'm going to adopt a kid from krypton" Kent) having any problem (moral or whatsoever) in forging some papers for their martian friends. So it's out of character, to say the least.

That said, the Titans had been so bad a title since OYL that the current arc is nearly good.

Please, Mr DC, put your Monkey in any other title.

I'm bored, terribly bored... I'm suposed to be working, but I relly don't want to.

Blah.

So, I guess I will review a bit:

First of all, I wanted to comment something on Gotham Underground that made me wonder:
Photobucket

Look at Dick's (yeah, that's the Grayson boy in disguise) cellphone's screen. I mean...are you for real, man? They are suposed to be undercover, they are suposed to be smart... and he has a robin logo in his mobile while he talks on the sly with his "temmates" just mere inches away.

sigh...

On the other hand, I love to see Robin teamign with Wildcat again. I don't know why, but I find them cute.
Also, seem's a certain doctor is back, and I don't know if that means that Spoiler is who we think she is or not.

Anyway...
"Countodown to whatever, as if readers cared anymore now there's no Piper, Trickster, Harley, Holly and/or Jason" seems to be getting to a point. There's somethign wrong with a your storytelling habilities when you turn a hero into a villian, then turn it into a heroe again, then turn it into a villian again (uh??). Also, there's something wrong with comicbooks in general when the fate of the universe lays in Jimmy Olsen's hands.
Just... well... just wrong.

What else?
Nightwing's been great. Really. I just love Tomasi. Characters are cute, full of energy and good at what they do.
Only thing I don't agree with the writer is his way of depicting Tim. I know Grayson is a better fighter and is also witty and clever, but I really think that, given that Robin is the detective one, he should be more than a tag along.
The rest, just wonderful. And the I loved the ending.

And that's all for today.
Ten minutes to go.

So, what's been happening in the marvelous and wonderfull world of comic books since I last reviewed??

Well, for one, Whedon is still the f*cking boss. I mean... how can he still lead me wherever he wants me to go without me realizing it?
Astonishing X-men and Runaways have been a delightful read. Specially the first one. I never saw it comming, honestly. I think it's plainly brilliant.
He is also setting a nice scenario on Buffy for a big emotional crack-a-boom somewhere, and Angel, even if he is not the actual writter, is getting reaaally interesting. Also... FIREFLY!!!! Firefly in comics!! Again!! Yipey! Yipey!

Ahem...

What else? My non DC experiences very much end here (except for New Xmen). And apart from a few weird and cute independent titles (such as Young Lovecraft)... well, I'm a DC girl right now. Even if everyweek I ask my self why.

So, "Countdown to whatever, I really don't care" is boring as hell. bitching ahead. Yes, I hate it that much. )

So, what else?
Robin was a nice read again. I like Chuck Dixon, that's all. The new artist is nice too, and even if I'm not sure if we are really going to have Steph back, hope springs eternal. I mean, with Chuck back we have recovered Alvin Draper, Martin Ives, lame excuses, angry girlfriend and an actual detective Timmy so far, so, why not? The moment I saw the Condiment King I knew everything was posible with Chuck.

Gotham Underground... If anything, it makes me curious. Seems we have Leslie back. Apart from that... WTF?? Really, it makes so little sense I'm amazed anyone could sell these story.
I made up a dialogue again, yes )
So, yeah... I'm following it because, well, becasue the good part is that all the Batfamily is working toghether like they did in the all times, and because Oracle is able to hack computers even from Starbucks. She is cool like that.

what else? what else?
Oh... yes... Teen Titans
So, depressed Kid devil decides to throw a party to lift his spirit, it ends up in disaster, basically because male teenagers are dicks, and, in the end, after trying to have a gay date to replace Zatara, he is beaten up by a new group of evil Titans (seems like the cool thing to do amongst teenagr now-a-days, create evil incarnations of the Titans).
OK, perhaps I've invented the gay date thing... just barely... but the rest is quite accurate. So yes, stupid plot as well in here.
still, some great moments )
This current arch, though, maybe... only maybe... can lead to something good. So I'll give it a try.

And finally, yes... Nightwing is the best I'm reading currently. Who would have thought. I just love Tomasi and wish he would write everything Bat-family realted (sorry, Chuck, even Robin).
Why?
Because of things like this )
See, that's what I call good writting. Inside jokes, brotherly love, cute Alfred, references to past plots... sigh...

SWEENY TODD

On fryday I watched Sweeny Todd and I have to say:

WOW

Of course, I have more things to say:

First of all, I'm a proud Burton fan, so perhaps I'm, a bit biased, but... what can I say? Sondheim is also a favorite of mine and I love that particular play since I saw it in Catalan, sang by the magnificent Constantino Romero. So, yes, I was ready to like it. But that can be a trick sometimes.

I could end up disappointed.

I was not.

cleaned and shaved review ahead )

So, all in all, one of the best films I've seen in ages. Technically speaking at least I found it nearly perfect. Perhaps it's Burton's best film. I don't know, I'm not that expert. But I surely recomend it, unless you don't like grimm, sad tales. Or you don't laugh at dark humor. Or you don't like musicals.

Oh, screw it!

I recommend it even to those who seem more likely to dislike it.

It's simply beautiful poetry for the big screen

My inner fangirl is in a good mood lately.

This has been a good week for her. Booster Gold made her squee with glee, even if I'm sure it's not going to be that easy. Anyway... BLUE AND GOLD!!!! I'm going to enjoy it for as long as I can.

What else? Oh, yes... ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL is making me remember why I had a crush on Angel. Spike is also great. He has this pathetic way of being awesome (or was an awesome way of beign pathetic?) that we all love. Also.. the end of issue 3... OMG!!!!!! WHAT? WHEN? HOW? WHY? WHERE?

Buffy,on the other hand, was not bad, but... Xander saved the issue.

But, let's be franc. What made my inner fangirl to (figuratively) jumping up and down all over the room was ROBIN 170 and the return of Chuck Dixon.

images and spoilers behind the cut, and it's not a pun )

Aside from the new writer we also have a new artist, one who knows what a perspective is, and does not draw weird proportions.
My inside fangirl is happy, and I'm too. ^^

Ok, it's been like... a lot since I last reviewed my comics. As I'm currently in love with Nightwing art and writer, I think it's time to do it again.

So...
Are they still spoilers two months later?? )

So, I think that's more or less all, except...

NIGHTWING 140

OMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I want to say that I LOVE Tomasi (that is, the current writer) because he remembers Dick is an acrobat, and loves his family, and likes his work, and is a charming young man, but not a slut. Nearly no angst.

sigh...

I like the way he intereacts with Timmy (lovely two pages), the way Tim looks as his big brother as the coolest guy in the world (which he is), the way Bruce is grumpy daddy and Alfred is the charming, understanding mother...

The artist is also great (I promise to post some scan for my and your delight). Soooo pretty and dynamic...

I'm happy FINALLY someone has remembered how a Flying Grayson should be.

Recently the main bat-books have shared a big event crossover.

And, yes, I've followed it.

Holly spoilers, Batman! )

Still, Alfred rules everytime he appears, and that can save any storyline, lame and bad written as that one was.

Oh, and I liked I-ching too.

Besides the fact that is really unfair to have to wait until next september to watch volume 3, I have to say that I support writers. Their work is what make this series so great and, as we all are suffering in our own flesh and bones, without them plots would make no sense or, worse, we would have no plot at all.

This poor second season has been a victim of the strike. It's more than evident. We have been rushed through a mostly non-interesting plot, with few twists and less surprises. Some great characters have been trated poorly while completely uninteresting ones have been given too many screen minutes. Still, I've enjoyed it greatly.

But, let's not jump to conlcusions so quickly, I have to bitch about episode 11 first:

yup, review in here )

All in all, I had fun, really. Even if it was all rushed and a pair of characters were waaaaaaaaaaaay off character.

We'll ahve to wait nine long months. Luckily, we'll have... er... we'll have.. wait. No. We have nothing!!

REC

So, yes, yesterday I finally went and watched REC, the terror film by Balagueró and Plaza.
Well, before giving any more detail about it I'll just say:

WOW!!! Do you know how long it was since I last screamed watching a film?? It's just so... so... WOW.

But let's review it properly:
'Pablo, keep shooting, for your f@#¬ing mother's sake!' )

All in all, a must for all the genre lovers. You can't say you like terror films and let it pass.
Also, please, watch it before the American remake is finished, even if the directors of that one would be behind the script. We all know what America do to good and solid ideas. You just have to remember The Ring, The Grudge or even Vanilla Sky.

I'd tried to be the less spoilery possible in case anyone wants to see it, but that's always tricky.
