Last week I went to the cinema to watch 300.

Wow.

I already knew the graphic novel and think it's one of the best I've ever read, so I was eager to see the film. Sin City was a good precedent (in my opinion, at least) that Miller's art can be easily adapted to the big screen.

So thre I was, ready to see a decent film with impresive images (that was what I wanted to see the most, the graphic aspects of the film). I was not all sure that the rest of the film was going to satisfy me. I was gladly wrong.

It did satisfy me.

Ok, they had given the queen a major role when she was just a mere note. They also did with Arwen in LOTR, didn't they? Ok, they have added some characters, given some others more importance, they have given Leonidas more humanity than he showed on the book. Heck, I even know, as an historian, that Sparta didn't exactly work that way. It was a Diarchy, not a Monarchy. Women and men didn't look at each other, so even less slept with each other (even if women did have more voice and power than they had in all Greece back then). They were xonophobic, genocidal and fascist. Also, I know that there was not that many people in the known world back then.

so what?

They were other times. Also,the film is highly entertaining, it's beautiful in its conception and making. Colors are acuratedly used (nothig brighter than those spartan cloacks), light, shade, voices... everything is been taken care to be exactly as one imagined when reading the novel. And, oh, girl, what a pretty bunch of half naked men!!!

Also... that Kherkhes...


The Battle of the Thermopilae is one of my favorite stories of all ancient Greece, it always awed me how a bunch of just 300 men could have stopped so big an army.

With your shield or over it (WOOOOOOOOO).

Anyway, I recomend it. Entertaintment on its best. And even a little, tiny bit of history. Things like that will show people that history is not boring at all.
